2nd Grade

Apple Printing

Just before Christmas the 2nd grade made apple baskets to integrate with their literature unit on Apple Tree Christmas.  This is always quite a messy job but the kids enjoy it.

Learning Landscapes

We took our first look at making
landscapes this past week.  We made fall trees and they are hanging in the hallway if you can stop in and see them.  The kids worked very hard although several of them had a hard time keep the watercolors under control.  We will do a few landscape projects this year.  We will look at how to depict trees in the winter and in the spring.

Pirate Ships

Since the kids have been listening to Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson in class I had them work on making Pirate Ships.  They really enjoyed this project.  First we made the water with paint; adding texture with plastic forks.  Then they made the ships with constructions paper and oil pastels.  They all worked very hard.  They have great imaginations.

I found the idea for this lesson on:  http://www.deepspacesparkle.com/2010/02/pirate-ship-art-lesson-for-fourth-grade/.

Field Trip!
Wow, we had such a beautiful day for our field trip.

A great view from art hill .

Printmaking

A collagraph print is made by gluing textured materials onto a block, sealing it, and then printing it.
The 2nd grade worked on this the past couple of weeks.  They measured out yarn and glued it onto carboard squares to make their "block."
They then printed their design onto colored paper.
They finished up by adding detail with oil pastel and crayon.

2nd grade is ready for art!
How much they have grown in one year!
I am looking forward to a lot of great art from this group.
